The Trouble with SAP Data Warehouse + Analytics Cloud

The integration between SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and Analytics Cloud is a funny thing (tl;dr: it’s a feature)

Having been an early adopter of SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) in 2017 and having guided many clients through their initial dashboard projects, I thought I knew the ins and outs of the various integration issues.

For example, a customer can expect certain functionalities of SAC to be available when paired with a HANA data warehouse live-data connection and a subset of features are available when paired with a Business Warehouse (BW) or S4HANA (S4) source system.

Regardless of the source system, the process is the same for a Live Data Connection. That’s not the case with Data Warehouse Cloud (DWC).

Dashboards vs Applications

What’s the difference between dashboards and applications in SAP Analytics Cloud? Here’s my 2-cents.

Recently, I gave a workshop on building custom applications with SAP Analytics Cloud.

For those who are familiar with the drag-and-drop nature of building dashboards with Analytics Cloud, then you know it has a very simple interface that allows you quickly to put together a series of charts for your business.

Better dashboards in SAP Analytics Cloud | Designer

If your company is using SAP Analytics Cloud, then your users will quickly ask for more.

The most frequent request I’ve been asked is for more functionality like a summary to detail drill-through or more tiles and widgets that can possibly fit on a laptop screen.

But how are you going to cram in additional charts and information all the while making sure that your dashboard still runs at an acceptable pace?

The quick & dirty guide to beautiful dashboards

“Okay. Show me what you’ve done. Wow me.”

A prospective client said those words in a recent interview. Sure. No pressure.

Have I ever told you I’m horrible with interviews? 😅

As an early adopter of SAC in 2017, however, I’m keenly aware of what the tool can and cannot do. Wowing isn’t something that I would say is high in that list when it comes to this emerging tool.

Still, it’s a super cool product and I haven’t been excited about something like this in a long time. But first, let me get back to putting my foot in my mouth during the interview.

No HANA, No problem

Recently, a friend called me in a panic. His client asked for help with piloting a SAP Analytics Cloud on BW system. 😱

He’s one of the most sought after Analytics Architects in the country and is I’m constantly jealous of his work on the most cutting edge technologies. It just happened that he was given this particular scenario.

Luckily, I had helped one of my customers pilot a SAP Analytics Cloud project in late 2017 on a BW on HANA system. We had Live Data Connections to both of the BW and HANA systems so I was able to tell him all about the differences and limitations for each option.
